Actor Vicky Kaushal's period drama opened on a strong note at the box office. Despite receiving mixed reviews, the Laxman Utekar directorial has achieved the biggest opening of 2025. Additionally, the film has also become the biggest opener for Vicky to date.
As per early estimates, Chhaava performed strongly on its opening day, earning approximately Rs 31 crore (nett) across all languages. The film had an overall 35.17 per cent occupancy in Hindi on Day 1. The film proved to be the best opener for Vicky and Indian films in 2025.
With its impressive opening, Chhaava has become Vicky’s highest-grossing debut, surpassing the Rs 8.20 crore record set by Uri: The Surgical Strike.
The film also outperformed Akshay Kumar’s Sky Force, which earned Rs 15.30 crore on its first day, making it the biggest Bollywood opener of 2025. Chhaava also broke the record set by Gully Boy in 2019 of Rs 19.40 crore, becoming the highest-grossing Indian film on Valentine’s Day.
Given the strong word of mouth and Vicky Kaushal-Akshaye Khanna’s on-screen persona, the film is expected to pick up pace in the days to come.
India Today Digital’s Chhaava review read, “Watch it for Vicky's performance. His commitment to his craft is unparalleled. Chhaava doesn't aim to be exceptionally different, but it masters the art of navigating the mainstream waters without completely drowning in the cacophony of its own voice.”
Produced by Dinesh Vijan under Maddock Films and directed by Laxman Utekar, Chhaava tells the story of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.
